Not even the Winter Olympics can stop hackers from making the headlines. Just before the opening ceremony, the Pyeongchang 2018 website was hit with a destructive malware attack that took the website offline for over 12 hours. During this time, attendees were unable to print tickets, WiFi within the stadium wasn’t working, and television and internet were unavailable in the main press center (potential business interruption).
According to Cisco’s, security group, Telos, the hackers simply targeted the Olympics disrupt the Games. The researchers stated “Olympic Destroyer” malware dropped multiple executable files onto an infected system, designed to retrieve stored credentials, and a system credential stealer, designed to steal legitimate credentials from Windows Local Security Authority Subsystem Service.
